Get a hobby!

Communication is my main focus as a professional, but like anyone else, I’ve picked up a few hobbies along the way. Over the last year, illustrative design has become one of my favourites.

Designing for me melds together my interests in typefaces, different cultures, and abstract arts. Every time I start on an Illustrator canvas, I jog my mind for inspiration. Not only has this helped me stay on my toes as a creative professional, but it’s also kept me from running out of juice when it comes to catchy, short-form writing. With illustrative design, captions and internal copy are a breeze!

Where to start

I was fortunate enough to get Adobe’s Creative Cloud (that includes Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and more) through my college, right from the start of my career. This isn’t a perk everybody gets their hands on, though, I understand. Not to fret! There is a lot of FREE software you can use to get the most out of your downtime.

My suggestion

Try out:

  • Canva

It offers both free and premium accounts and many of the same features as Adobe. Plus, it’s beginner-friendly. No YouTube tutorials (or headaches!) necessary.

Above all, let yourself play around with your tool of choice. Treat it as a hobby or as a way to keep your hands busy in class. Have fun, and let your mind do the work…

That’s the point of this exercise of creativity after all!

Creativity is intelligence having fun
